Haydn Visual Representation

Although both Mozart and Haydn’s musical works can be found in today’s popular culture, it is evident that Mozart’s work is more accessible than Haydn. According to the Naxos website, approximately 65 television shows and movies showcase at least one piece from Mozart while approximately 9 television shows and movies use Haydn pieces.

The popularity of Mozart is much greater than that of Haydn, apparent from his abundance of musical works in today’s society. Moreover, the history and meaning behind Mozart’s pieces is often somehow correlated to the scene it is playing in. In the movies/shows where Haydn’s pieces are played, the pieces are often used as non-diagetic sound. One of the reasons for this is that many of Mozart’s pieces have implication that are relatable to today’s popular culture unlike Haydn where the significance behind his works are often unknown. Although Western Musical styles are not commonplace in today’s society, it is still integrated into popular culture, by enjoying these pieces through a different avenue, television and movies.

  1. It is interesting that Haydn is not as well represented as Haydn was born before and outlived Mozart. Haydn lived to 77, a rather old age for the time, while Mozart had a rather short life, living to the age of 35. Im not sure who wrote more music within their life time. Mozart starting writing at a very young age but Haydn out lived Mozart by 42 years. It would make logical since that Haydn did compose more pieces within his life time, which you would think would be more well represented in soundtracks based on sheer abundance.
    Great representation guys!

  2. That's a really interesting observation, Leah.
Which goes back to the question concerning what it is exactly about Mozart's music that makes it so appealing?
I suppose it's a matter of quality over quantity...

  3. I like your observations here and wonder if there are the other classical musicians that beat out Mozart in terms of usage in popular culture. Perhaps Bach or Beethoven? Did you happen to come across that in your research? Also did you come across the use of Mozart and Haydn in commercials/advertisements? Also I'd like to say I do like this blog. Very good format as it's appealing and informative! Great work!
